San Luis de Sabinillas is a district located by the sea, belonging to Manilva, Málaga. It´s 97 km far from Malaga city and 35 km far from Gibraltar. Its relevance, most between the youngest, is because of the children's colony there. In 2009 it had a population of 6.289.
This district is in the coast, with Manilva in the North, the A-7 in the West (crossing the district), El Castillo de la Duquesa (Castillo de Sabinillas) in the South and the Alboran Sea in the East. It´s protected by low level mountains and the environment is covered by developments and farms. It´s poor in vegetation.
Archaeological remains have been found belonging to the Bronze Age, of which little is known. The most important ones are dated in the times of the Roman. They are part of the of the goods of the population in a Roman village, and they have relation with those that appeared in El Castillo, which belong to a thermal bath and a tower of defense. You can also find two battelement towers dated in the XVth century.
Festivals
San Luis de Sabinillas celebrates its festivals in August, in honor of San Luis. It also celebrates the harvest during the first week of September. Since it is a coastal town, was a procession to the Virgen del Carmen in July.
Gastronomy
The local gastronomy is mainly made up by dishes from the Spanish Mediterranean diet, including their famous fried seafood and cooked fish. The traditional Andalusian gazpacho is an important part of it too.
Leisure
The main tourist attraction and leisure is Sabinillas beach and marina located between El Castillo and Sabinillas. During the summer, young people flock to the colony Andalucía child above.
